Dental Implants
Dental implants are changing the way people live! They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth which look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved.
To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have integrated the module you see below with our web site. Many of the frequently asked questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed. Case studies, video testimonials, and a printable brochure are also available through the module.
Dental Implant Presentation
To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed.
What are Dental Implants?
The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts which are inserted into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jaw bone. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts are then attached to the implant which protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing.
The Surgical Procedure
Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. Dr. Jeworski and Dr. Wang are able to use the most recent advances in dental implant technology for the placement of your implant. Implant surgery can be done in one or two surgical procedures. This is dependent on the bone availability in the designated implant area and the patient's preference.
For the placement of implants involving two surgical procedures, first, the tooth is extracted and/or a bone graft is placed. After approximately 4-6 months, once the area is completely healed, implants are then placed within your jawbone and allowed to heal for another 3-6 months before your dentist is able to place a permanent crown.
For single surgery cases, the implant is placed along with the bone graft at the time of tooth extraction. The implants are then allowed to heal for 3-6 months prior to the final restorations by your general dentist. Immediately, following surgery, you should be able to wear temporary dentures or appliances and eat a regular diet during your healing period. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.
After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, Dr. Jeworski and Dr. Wang uncover the implants and attach small posts which will act as anchors for the artificial teeth. These posts protrude through the gums. When the artificial teeth are placed these posts will not be seen.
Overall, depending on the number of surgical procedures, the entire dental implant placement procedure, from tooth extraction to placement of a permanent crown, usually takes anywhere from three to eight months to complete.
